We Are Not Weak, Stupid!

It has been at least a quadrant of a year now that Afghan government’s relation has slowly and gradually deteriorated with the US administration which included accusations by the US of corruption and wrong governance on the part of Afghanistan’s Karzai Administration. This row further deteriorated when yesterday the Pentagon released a report calling the Afghan government as “A corrupt government lacking leadership”, which was immediately rejected by the Presidential Spokesman in Kabul in the strongest terms. In addition, Michael Mullen keeping the same tone said that afghanistan needed “a better government” than the increase in the number of US troops on the ground.

The recent concerns of US expressed in the form of a report by the Pentagon emphatically stressed that Afghanistan has “the weakest government”. Humayun Hamidzada, the presidential Spokesman in Kabul, rejected it saying, “We accept that a government involved in reconstruction of a country is pretty young and we are still in the process of growth, but we can’t accept that we have a weak government.” He added, “We have taken major steps in bringing democracy and a public system, peace and stability, development and these steps will lead us to success in the long run.”

The West strongly supported Karzai seven years ago but now have turned their back at him on the occassion of Afghanistan’s upcoming presidential elections. Karzai has faced sharp crticism in the last few weeks from his western backers. This in a poor country like Afghanistan simply is a clear indication that Karzai had better leave the ground and not dare run in the upcoming elections otherwise he will face humiliating defeat. Afghanistan’s Public won’t decide the outcome of the upcoming elections, most say, it will be the western forces to decide as to who should replace serving President. However, it’s true that Karzai has been pretty weak in tackling issues related to terrorism and Corruption. In fact, by not taking serious action against the corrupt officers of his administration he has facilitated them. But again, Afghan nation has had numerous remarkable acheivements during his tenure. President Karzai is deemed to be remembered as a mere actor or simply as put in the international media “mayor of Kabul” and not as a strong full fledge president of Afghanistan like his predecessors.
