BBC has come across an email that was sent to UK’s Ministry of Foreign affairs in which it has been claimed that more than 60% of afghan policmen in the southern province of Helmand are drug takers (drug addicts). This was written in an email by a British national working in Helmand. Helmand, the province where UK and NATO forces are in an active combat against militants (Taliban), is the most unrest province of the 34 provinces.
UK’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its deep concerns on the worsening situation. In a press release it has termed the situation it said,”We are extremely concerned on the increased use of drugs amongst Afghan Police.” Further, the statement reads, “Police forces in Afghanistan receive little attention, salary and training and are entrusted dangerous missions”.
As per the Bonn Agreement International community has a responsibility to train and equip both Afghan National Police and Afghan National Army. Most police personnel are trained in countries other than Afghanistan. In addition, the police force in Afghanistan is a very corrupt institution where their District Police Officers are appointed with bribe and removed with bribe. Everything has a price in Afghanistan particularly those pertaining to governmental institutions. The corruption in Afghanistan is dangerously high and puts the country the top 5th most corrupt state.
