Pakistan :

Governments and world leaders are worried about a possible surge in violence between India and Pakistan after the bloody attacks in Mumbai that killed at least 195 people, including many foreign nationals. To ease tensions, intelligence officials are searching urgently for clues that might identify the attackers even as Indian officials claim “elements in Pakistan” were involved. The world has its fingers crossed in hopes of reducing the Indian anger over the attacks in which the most populated and industrial Indian city bore three of the worst days of its recent history. Indian anger was obvious right from the beginning as the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh addressed his nation on TV and radio. Pakistan on the Defense as Mumbai Mourns

Surprisingly the language of the Indian Prime Minister showed no variation from his predecessors. Indian officials have historically blamed Pakistan and its Inter-Services Intelligence Agency which goes under the well known title and acronym of ISI. This time though the scale of the attack was much greater than the previous acts of terrorism in India; the tactics applied by the terrorists were also very much different. More surprisingly, this time, Pakistan hasn’t only rejected the Indian claims but has also been pretty serious in the issue. I can’t recall any act of terrorism in India that has caused the Pakistani government to call emergency meetings. But why this time? Never before has any ISI representative openly visited India under his title to investigate or share information, why this time? Any Pakistani official may come up with an answer that both Pakistan and India had signed a counter-terrorism pack under which spying agencies’ chiefs could visit each other’s countries, in case needed. But why wasn’t any Indian spying official called to Pakistan when Islamabad was burning?

In the case of Mumbai’s Taj Mahal and Oberoy Hotels, Pakistan was once again accused. The accused nation is now preparing to defend its case. Over the media, the Pakistani officials were the first to condemn such a cowardice act right from the president to the members of the parliament. It was even unfortunate to happen at a time when a high level Pakistani delegation, led by the Pakistani Foreign Minister, was in Delhi for talks and for bringing closer the people of the two countries that have regarded each other as ‘worst enemies’ since their creation in 1947.

Whatever the Pakistanis do, Indians are angered and now they are openly accusing their neighbor of having stabbed in its back by talking of peace on the one hand and of supporting the terrorist outfits in India on the other. However, Pakistanis are no less than the Indians; they were quick to condemn the attacks and proposing for cooperation by even sending representatives of their intelligence agency, setting a tradition that has no history in the sub-continent. In addition, the Pakistani officials have assured their Indian counterparts of unceasing support in their efforts to find out as who was involved in these inhuman acts that left nearly 200 Indians and foreign nationals dead.

Armed with nuclear arsenal, both countries now need to work closely to avoid a military clash over this issue and think wisely for the safety of those who are alive. Interestingly, in these two countries, the living citizens don’t have that value as the dead. In other words, their masses are simply a grave-worshipping public. But the time has come for the people of both nations to open their eyes and accept the reality that those who fell victim to this inhuman act can’t be brought back. However, what the nations can do is to vow not to allow miscreants destroy their trust which they have established at a very heavy price. It will not be wise either to rush to a conflict of accusations as it will bring no fruit other than embarrassment, once it is proved wrong.

Now as this article is coming to an end, I can see on news channels the breaking news that India is threatening of waging a possible war against Pakistan which I believe is not a wise decision because India better knows that it can do no harm to Pakistan by increasing the troops level on the borders. No peace-loving nation or civilian would like to see war anymore. At this point, I am reminded that history is the story of events out of which we never learn. India must act wisely and learn from history that by imposing war on a nation like Pakistan is not going to reap any results. Rather, it will find itself trapped in a relationship of distrust - a distrust that will cause an irreparable loss to the people of the two nations who managed to come closer to one another through cultural exchange programs and co-productions in film industries etc. As a common, peace-loving civilian, I wish the leaders could hear the crying hearts of the victims’ relatives who would never wish to see others in trouble because of the menace of war.

The choice of what to do is very clear to the two nations? Should we fight childisly over petty issues or think like wise men who come around a table of talks and unhide those who are trying to keep the two nations in the rows of underdeveloped nations while both have a very strong potential of joining the rows of the developed world. Another war after five fruitless wars in the Indo-Pak history will bring nothing but more suffering to the poverty- stricken people of India and Pakistan.

Ikarm, you have taken a very interesting angle on teh issue. You show us that India and Pakistan are doing so poorly on the political level that they are goading thier people to war. But on the less acknowledged cultural level, as you mentioned, people from both sides want to live in peace and love. Only in art do we see the harmony of thought and action between Indian and Pakistani nations and they actually have the potential to establish peace in the region. So what can the artist community do in times like these?

Yes, I agree with both Ikram and Peshawar from that beautiful border town of the NWFP as they have come out with welcome comments. It is high time both the countries eschew chauvinism and work together for the upliftment of millions and millions who are indoctrined unabatedly by bigots in both the countries. At the same time fight the monster of terrorism (don’t couch it by using the political term militants), propped up and abetted by western powers but eagerly grabbed by Pakistan and India. Do you know India ranks second to Iraq as far as the terrorists;s activities are concened since 2004.

Thank u both for sharing ur comments.

The truth is that both countries have been hit hard by the terrorists in their history. The dialemma i believe with the two nations is that none has produced a far sighted leader. Politicians have been corrupt right from the beginning and armies have been eager for a war to show each other their power that comes from a major portion of the national GDP. I bet had Pak and India spent half the GDP they spend on Military weapons on Education and aleiviation of poverty you would find no terrorists today. Had both countries emerged a totally independent foreign policies no terrorists could have ever been produced.

Yes Ikram, you are so very right (though politically very incorrect, LOL!)but what is past is past. Now what is there that might be done at the level of the masses to prevent more suffering? What role can writers and artists play in preventing war and hatred?

The guy in the video apparently is a fool who has used flawed history to justify his rhetorical anti-India lecture. Chanakya found Chandragupta and groomed him to be the ruler of India. He found him as a young boy who was playing King with his friends. That happened in Magadh province what is now Bihar in India.

It is obvious that when an entire population is so gullible to gutter discourses - whether from mosques by the radical mullahs or from ’educated analysts’ like the bloke in the video - the country is doomed to commit suicide collectively as a nation.

Abid, Its not time for hatred. In fact there is no time for hatred.

Shame on those who are using death of innocents as a premise to strengthen their political cloud.

I am a Pakistani, and I feel deeply hurt by the brutal killing of innocents.

I think politicians of Indian and Pakistan should be killed at once, because they are the one who are responsible.

People from all countries should come and unite together, and crush the venomous snake of terrorism.

Shomaila, I side with you on the issue and endorse the fact that hatred is only going to make things worse. However, killing politicians is not the solution. Killing anyone is not the solution because all kinds of substitutes are there. We need careful planning and refinement of our political systems, in both countries. Only then can we hope to unroot terrorism and establish peace.

@ Ikram:
Indian officials have historically blamed Pakistan and its Inter-Services Intelligence Agency which goes under the well known title and acronym of ISI.

And historically Pakistan government and the ISI has sponsored, trained and supported terrorists against India.

It all seems so familiar, isn’t it?

@ Abid:

You got it wrong friend if you are saying that Lt. Col. Purohit was involved. The now slained ATS chief made it clear that he was being misinterpreted and misquoted by the media. Read his interview here.

He said:
A lot has been made of the Samjhauta Express statement that was made by the public prosecutor in the case. There was a statement made by the witness that Purohit helped in the procurement of RDX. That was a part of the case diary. It cannot be taken as gospel truth. What was wrong was the mention of the same to the media, although we had said that there is no such evidence of the same.
The truth is that the ISI carried out the brazen attack on the Samjhauta express. You must know, Indian Army or the Armed forces don’t use RDX. RDX is used by the terrorists like those in L-e-T and J-e-M operating out of Pakistan and ISI provides them with training, logistical support etc for carrying out attacks against India.

@ Abid:

Sorry that I forgot to mention that I don’t blame you for getting it wrong. What can one do when being constantly fed on anti-India propaganda.

Fact is that NO ARREST has been made for the Samjhauta Express terror attacks. The arrest of Sadhvi Pragya and Lt. Col. Purohit was for the Malegaon bomb blast. And please for god’s sake, don’t think of me defending them. I am just citing the factual truth here.

Of course, he was amongst the first to be killed. Why? Whenever there is a terror attack in Mumbai, the Mumbai ATS is the first one to go to the spot. There was a major attack and the ATS chief led the police party to the spot. Killing him would serve the purpose of the ISI for giving the incident a Hindu twist like the one you are trying so hard here.

Talking about reading newspapers, I think as a journalist for many, many years now, I know a few things about news and propaganda. I also know exactly the kind of media exposure that you have in Pakistan.

Let’s take an international perspective to the Mumbai terror attacks. Please read this and this.

I am not Journalist like you, just a software engineer. but i know, after first terrorist attack in Mumbai, with an hour, Indian government started blaming Pakistan and ISI with out any evidence.

For your information I was a software architect myself and still am, not no longer do programming on a professional level. Just whenever I need to create an app for myself. Anyway, that’s not what I want to discuss. To have the sense to presume from a pattern like the sophistication of the attacks, the weaponry used, the logistics the terrorists had doesn’t require the brain of a journalist, or a software architect, or a painter for that matter. This is despite what our super-duper world class screw-ups in the Intelligence Bureau think. [Check this out]

All the pointers so far are towards Pakistani involvement that includes GPS navigational logs, satellite phone logs, loose ends and even the captured live terrorist. He has confessed having come from Pakistan.

It’s pleasing to know that you are also a software engineer.

”All the pointers so far are towards Pakistani involvement that includes GPS navigational logs, satellite phone logs, loose ends and even the captured live terrorist. He has confessed having come from Pakistan.”

can you provide any of these evidences? i did not see any of this on any channel...

if you show me single of this...i will stop supporting ISI. :)

dear friend, it is very easy to say like this, but there are not reality. If Indian government is sure that Pakistan is involve this case, why they don’t call any International Justice committee or something like this ? Why these evidences are not shown yet? these evidences are just words of mouth and there is nothing solid to support these words..Okey.....

@ Abid:

I am a Delhi-based journalist, and I have sources inside the agencies investigating the case as most senior journalists have. Besides, asking to show evidence now is childish to say the least. Investigations are going on and only time will tell if the government of Pakistan is involved or just the ISI (which is a state within a state not answerable to the government or the Army) was behind it.

Remember when the Pakistan Army was taking over the Kargil Heights, even the PM of your country was surprised. This is how the state of affairs are in Pakistan. The whole world knows that.

The Indian Airlines hijack to Kandahar made India release dreaded terrorists who went into Pakistan and formed terrorist groups like the Jaish. One went to kill the Wall Street journalist Daniel Pearl. He is still on death raw. Why hasn’t he been executed still after so many years?

And whether you like it or now, this time Pakistan will know what it is like to continue supporting terror. By Pakistan, I don’t necessarily mean the Pakistan civilian government, but the ISI and the Pakistan military.

”evidence now is childish to say the least. Investigations are going on and only time will tell if the government of Pakistan is involved or just the ISI ”

if you don’t have any evidence please please please don’t blame,...when ever you get some solid evidence that is something you can show ....just start blaming after that :)

and cool now...........Time will decide who is guilty.....let’s start some coding....

Dear Abid and Jayanta,
It appears to me that you guys are more interested in pin pointing the faults of the two corrupt governments of the two states. For now what i think is more relevant is to dig into our past since i strongly believe that incidents like Mumbai blasts give us a rare opportunity to look into our past and try to mend it for the future otherwise, history has nothing to offer rather it punishes those who do not heed to what it says.

It is not a question of two corrupt governments. It is a question of a state whose various organizations have gone out of hands and operate above the elected government abetting and facilitating terror strikes on the civilian population of another country.
