Not to the World Cup but to the International Arena…Hats Off to Afghan Cricket Team
The recent myth created by Afghanistan’s Cricket Team, which added much flavor to the ICC qualifiers in South Africa, was good enough to land them into the “One Day International” format of the game for the next four years. The Miraculous achievement of still affiliate member country of ICC has surprised everyone. The team which established itself in refugee camps shocked giant competitors of the tournament like Scotland, the defending champion, and Ireland. For a moment, they were also entitled “Dream Shatters” because of their aggressive nature. However, their immaturity in the international arena was the only negative point that disallowed them to get to the “impossible” world cup.

Afghanistan’s Cricket team began its journey of playing different countries on different platforms and beating them for only one year. A year ago, you would ask anyone whether Afghans play Cricket; the answer would always be in “No”. Today the world has come to understand that the war-torn nation is ready to stand on its feet and bounce back in sports. With their latest achievements in ICC World Cup Qualifier matches, they are ready to march into ODI games looking forward to playing against the finest teams of the world like Australia, Pakistan, India and South Africans. Licensed to play their “idols” Afghan cricketers’ joys know no bounds. They are anxiously waiting for the schedule of their matches.

Since Afghanistan doesn’t have a single cricket ground or stadium and the security problem in Pakistan has become so serious in the wake of attacks on Sri Lankan cricketers on March 3, 2009, Afghans are looking forward to using India as their home ground.

Afghans have proved their talent in the international arena and now is the time to give them an opportunity they well deserve to come forth and compete and win. They have proved their sporting skills in other games like Taekwondo, Buzkashi, Wrestling and boxing as well. With the status, they have earned lately, Afghan cricket team is expected to excel and maintain the tradition in the long term.
