Karzai's Recent Diplomatic Offensives...A South Asian Phenomena
Afghanistan has recently made some progress on the diplomatic front. Karzai has recently been in a tough arguement with his western backers. On the diplomatic front his administration is making some progress and achievements are on the way. In addition, recent Mumbai Styled attacks were strongly repelled and overcome in a very short span of time, which is also hailed around the world as Afghan Commando’s strength and discipline. This also adds a feather to the lingering President’s cap.

In the recent past, Karzai started a tug of war on the diplomatic fronts which was followed by his letter to his Russian counterpart for military support. To his luck, his letter also got a nod at the Kremlin, which added to the worries of his western backers. His emphasis on taking his administration on board in developing US’s strategy for Afghanistan under the new President Barack Obama was finally answered by the White House in a positive tone and now a team of Afghan experts are on their way to the White House for making their points on the developing new strategy on Afghanistan. Their input, to analysts, appears very crucial in determining the future direction of US policy on Afghanistan and in the region. Till now, US rely on the expertise of its own. An addition of afghan mind would make it easier for Obama administration to stay in the region for a lengthier period of time. But Anyways, by nodding to Karzai’s emphasis, it’s termed as Karzai’s win who has a reputation of a puppet president mockingly called Mayor of Kabul.

In a new political endeavor the Presidential spokesman has demanded of the US Army and government to hand over, the Afghan inmates of Notorious Bagram Airbase for proper trial in Afghanistan, to the Afghan government. This demand has come in a very ripe time where US has made it clear that ‘prisoners held in Bagram Airbase has no legal right to appeal for the decision of their cases in US’. This has paved the way for a new win on win situation for the defamed President who is expected to run for a new term in office in August. It’s also the first time; presidential palace has made such a demand. It’s simply cash in on phenomena which has its analogy much exercised in the countries of South Asia.

In south Asian countries, parties get a mandate for working for a period of over 4 years, but their work remains restricted to the last six months in office. The phenomenon is very simple, Rest for three and half years and then start working because you’ve to go back for cashing the votes of the least concerned public. If you have a budget to build a 10 kms road, start with a snail’s pace and in the final moments of your office, put on a good show and finish it abruptly. The public will be happy and the good name is also earned. The next elections which may be in a distance of a few days will be much easier for you. This is SOUTH AISAN PHENOMENON. Here, Karzai is applying the same rule for he has also lived a good proportion of his life in Pakistan and India, where he received his education. Following in the footsteps of South Asians, Karzai may hurt his feet and will never get back to the office because Afghans differ from the rest of South Asians in many ways.

It is natural for Karzai to heavily rely on foreign powers atthe moment while he girds up his loins for making Afghanistan internally stronger.

Thanks for the post!

Any leader is supposed to do his best for his country while in office. But to the bad luck of south asians and now afghans that their government only starts remembering their promises just before the next elections.

In Afghanistan, till last two months Karzai wouldn’t even be seen outside his palace. Now he appears pretty much politically involved in makes and breaks. Now the report is that he may reject Election Commissions decision of postponing elections till August and he may decree that elections be held in its time frame in April. I don’t know who is true. The election commission or Karzai. Or Karzai is himself confused as to what he is doing in the last days of his office.
