Flood claims 50 lives in Afghanistan

Due to severe flooding and resultant deaths and damages the department of Natural Disaster Management has imposed emergency in some parts of the country.

The death toll reported by the department’s officials has been more than 50 in severe flooding in some northern, eastern and western provinces of Afghanistan. These floods according to them have also caused extensive damages.

Explaining the imposition of emergency Muhammad Aslam Sias, deputy to the department, while talking to private news channel stated, “The imposition of emergency in these areas means that all the departments, NGO’s, and UN agencies which are involved in works related to Natural Disasters, must be ready and be sent to each of the districts, provinces and villages that are affected by the flood and receive damages to function on emergency basis”

According to the same source over two thousand residential houses and hundreds of domestic animals have been flooded. In addition, thousands of acres of agricultural land have also been badly affected.

The provinces of Takhar, Badakhshan, Baghlan, Samangan, Punjshir, Parwan, Faryab, Bamiyan, Ghazni, Herat and Kabul are some of the provinces badly affected by floods.

It’s the second natural disaster in a period of less than a month that has inflicted upon Afghanistan. A disastrous earth quake shook Afghanistan just last month leaving behind hundreds of deaths and thousands homeless. Consequently, the government called off its military parade to mark the event of Fall of Kabul to the hands of Mujahideen and allocated its amount to the affected people.

Melissa,

In this part of the world nothing gets to normal after a damage. It gets worse for the survivors who lose their homes and agricultural lands. Poverty breaks their spines.

The Afghan government+NGOs should pay attention to affected areas as well as to the people and take measure to help them out.In my humble view the UN agencies and Focus can play a vital role in the rescue efforts.
