Afghan Warlords in the Battle for Presidency

Afghan Election Commission made it clear that even the people who have a background in the country’s worst civil wars of 1990’s can run for the Presidency in the upcoming Presidential elections to be held on August 20, 2009.

Azizullah Loudin, Chief of Election Commission, while addressing a crowded press conference in Kabul made the remarks that legally there’s no law or rule that could stop people involved in the country’s three decades of war. According to him, several candidates running for the elections scheduled for August 20 are in someway(s) involved in the country’s 30 years of civil war and devastation. He also observed that there are also people, who have “created problems in the name of Islam“, running for the country’s highest slot.

The Chief Election Commissioner of Afghanistan also said, “There are also candidates whom I fought against before coming to Kabul for 12 years and also those who have used Islam as pretext in different situations to create problems.”
