Afghan Cricket Team on the Road to Making History

The following report flushed all over the world. Although it mentions a few countries but the most striking thing in it is the Name Afghan Cricket Team which no one could dream of until recently. BBC reports, “Afghanistan and Uganda have booked their places in the final qualifying event for the 2011 Cricket World Cup. They piped Papua New Guinea to the top two spots in the World Cricket League Division Three on net run-rate. The World Cup Qualifier will take place in South Africa in April, with the top four sides qualifying for 2011. Ireland and Scotland will also take part, along with the Netherlands, Kenya, Bermuda, United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Canada, Oman and Namibia.”

Cricket, a sport that afghans earned during their long years of migration to neighboring countries particularly Pakistan, is now firmly rooted in Afghan sports. In a country where traditional games like “Buzkashi” Goat Grabbing and internationally renown games like soccer, wrestling etc are popular, the world wondered as to whether afghans could accept this form of game. To their wonders came the strong 11 men Afghan Cricket team which has made remarkable success since its formal establishment in 1992. They are now on their way to making history by qualifying in the upcoming world cup of 2011 jointly hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. But before that they will have to overcome their biggest hurdles in April in South Africa where they are scheduled to play some of the finer sides. Afghans will hopefully present their talent in even a better way to overcome their rivals and reach their first ever Cricket World cup. Honestly speaking, winning or losing will have no effect on the spirit of this sport in Afghanistan since Afghans have already displayed their talent at the World Arena by reaching this zenith.

For the common afghans, qualifying for World cup would be another feather to the afghan hat. Recently, in the previous Olympics held in Beijing, Afghan Taekwando Star Rohullah Naikpa showcased afghan strength by grabbing bronze in his category, the first ever Olympic medal for afghan sportsmanship. Since, the invasion of US led coalition forces and the prevalence of Democracy, Afghans have achieved a lot to cherish about. Cricket is the sport that can turn this nation “cricket crazy nation” like its close, neighbors Pakistan and India.

Afghans have proved their strength in this sport and have definitely according to some proved their poem-proverb “Gar Nadani Ghairat-e-Afghani am— Choon ba maidan Aamadi Maidany am” which literally mean, if you don’t know my afghan strength (back), when you come to the (battle) ground, you will definitely know how tough I am. Afghans, popular for their rough nature and civil war destructed infrastructure, are building with block of hope and reviving their honorable seat in the comity of nations and Sports and Media are the best channel to propagate this phenomenon.
